Alan Broadbent and Harvie S will showcase jazz standards from the American Songbook, performed as a duo with spontaneous improvisation guided by the mood and inspiration of the moment.

Alan and Harvie have been performing in duo, trio, orchestra and sextet since 2011 and recorded over 9 CDs together. You can hear the duo with Sheila Jordan on “Better Than Anything and “Live at Mezzrow”.

Alan Broadbent was born in Auckland, NZ, and in 1966 received a Downbeat Magazine Scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. He also studied with the great jazz pianist, Lennie Tristano, at that time. In 1969 he joined the Woody Herman band as pianist and arranger for three years, after which he settled in Los Angeles. There he became associated with many well known musicians and artists including Irene Kral, Ruth Price, Natalie Cole, Nelson Riddle and Johnny Mandel. In the late 1980s he became a member of Charlie Haden’s Quartet West, touring and recording for 25 years. Alan has won two Grammys as an arranger for Natalie Cole and Shirley Horn and has been nominated fourteen times, including piano solo and trio recordings and his orchestral works for the London Metropolitan Orchestra, “Developing Story” and “Broadbent Plays Brubeck”. Most recently he has recorded three trio albums with Harvie S and Billy Mintz. “New York Notes”, “Trio In Motion” and “Like Minds”, with a soon to be released jazz sextet of his compositions, “Threads Of Time” (Savant Records). He is a beloved professor of Jazz Studies at NYU and resides with his wife and son in New Jersey.

Harvie S is a renowned jazz bassist, emerged as a prominent figure in the realm of contemporary jazz with his distinctive style and virtuosic technique. Throughout his illustrious career, Harvie has recorded with a plethora of jazz luminaries including Michael Brecker, Paquito D’Rivera, Chick Corea, Kenny Barron, John Scofield, Sheila Jordan, James Moody, and Yusef Lateef just to name a few, leaving an indelible mark on the global jazz scene. His dynamic bass lines and innovative approach to rhythm have earned him widespread acclaim among critics and audiences alike. He has released 21 recordings as a leader on major labels, 19 as a co leader and over 400 as a sideman. Harvie's musical versatility knows no bounds, as he effortlessly traverses various jazz sub genres, from traditional, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian to avant-garde, infusing each performance with his unique musical perspective. In addition to his prowess as a performer, Harvie is also a dedicated educator, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with aspiring musicians around the world. His teaching at the Manhattan School of Music continues to inspire the next generation of jazz artists, imparting invaluable insights into the art of jazz bass and Ensemble playing.
