ELEMENTAL DRIFT
August 15 – September 10, 2025 Opening Reception: Friday, August 22, 5:00 -7:00 PM Turner Carroll Gallery 725 Canyon Road Santa Fe, NM
Mokha Laget's solo exhibition Elemental Drift, opening at Turner Carroll Gallery, brings together three distinct yet interrelated bodies of work: sculptural shaped canvases, alchemical ink paintings on paper, and a newly animated projected score accompanied by an original sonic composition.
The new work expands upon her decades-long investigation into geometry, perception, and abstraction—inviting the viewer to enter a realm that is at once sensorial and conceptual, where pigment, sound, and surface act as portals into geological time and psychological space. Elemental Drift visually maps a fluid zone where matter becomes motion, and motion leaves a trace—sometimes faint, sometimes insistent. Iron oxide, Graphite, Mica, and hydro-carbon based inks, activate surfaces. Collectively the works capture material transformations in relation to events, prompting us to consider residues of meaning, emergent becoming, sonic reverberation and dynamic movement.
A side gallery houses Trace Elements, the exhibition's immersive, time-based centerpiece: a projected visual score animated video, accompanied by an original ambient soundscape created in collaboration with longtime collaborator and new media artist .
Born in North Africa and based in New Mexico, is known for her shaped geometric abstractions that explore perceptual paradoxes through vibrant color and architectural form. Trained in classical techniques in France, she earned a BFA from the Corcoran College of Art and Design and a degree in translation from Georgetown University. Her interdisciplinary career spans painting, curating, writing, theater, and sound-based visual scores. Laget’s work is held in major museum collections, including the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Palm Springs Art Museum, and was the subject of a ten-year survey at the American University Katzen Museum in 2022. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Frederick Hammersley Foundation Award, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, and residencies at MASS MoCA, the American Academy in Rome, and the Vladem Contemporary.
