About the event

From Shimao to the Qin Empire: Tracing Political Evolution with Dr. Min Li
SUNDAY | SEPTEMBER 14 | 1:30 – 2:30 PM
NORMA KERSHAW AUDITORIUM | DISTINGUISHED LECTURE

Presented by Dr. Min Li, Associate Professor of East Asian Archaeology, University of California, Los Angeles

Drawing on key archaeological findings from the World of the Terracotta Warriors exhibition, this lecture offers a detailed exploration of the political transformations in early China, from the dawn of the Bronze Age to the rise of its first empire.

Beginning with the emergence of Shimao, a prominent Longshan-era highland pilgrimage center, the lecture first traces the development of Bronze Age polities in the loess highlands and the Guanzhong Basin throughout the second millennium BCE. It then examines the rise and eventual collapse of the Western Zhou civilization (ca. 1046-771 BCE) in the Guanzhong Basin, setting the stage for the growth of the Qin state, which unified China under its imperial rule in 221 BCE.

By exploring the key historical moments represented in the exhibition, this lecture will investigate how the legacies of earlier societies shaped the political changes that transformed Shaanxi’s rich archaeological landscapes, leaving lasting imprints on the region’s history.

This lecture is generously sponsored by the Medellas Endowment.

Ticketed Event: Members $15 | General $20 | Purchase individually or as part of a 6-part series package.
