161th Anniversary of the Battle of New Market Heights

Join us to commemorate the 161th Anniversary of the Battle of New Market Heights. All events are free and open to the public.

Three lectures will be offered on Saturday morning, Sept. 27, 2025 at the Varina Ruritan Club starting at 9:30 am and will include:

Marvin Tupper Jones - "Families of Soldiers: USCTs and Genealogy"
Tim Talbott - "We Look Like Men of War: USCTs and the Richmond & Petersburg Campaign of 1864-65"
James Price - "The Men Who Made the Breakthrough: Draper's Brigade at New Market Heights & Beyond"

A walking tour of the New Market Heights battlefield will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2:30 pm.

The walking tour will start at Four Mile Creek Park/Virginia Capital Trail Parking Lot's center gazebo (3256 New Market Rd, Henrico, VA 23231). The tours will require about 1.5 to 2 miles of walking over occasionally uneven terrain and include periods of standing. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, bringing water, and bug spray.
