PCCA JUNE GENERAL MEETING SPECIAL PROGRAM

This meeting we have one of our very own Chuck Rambo doing a special presentation on "Unusual Dwarf Cichlids for the Planted Aquarium". As we have all seen, there is a big movement to smaller tanks and a general aquarium approach. Of course cichlids are part of this but we have seen a great deal of interest in Tetras, Catfish, Plecos, Discus and a surge in aquatic plants. Chuck is gonna bring us up to speed so make sure you get here early!

About the Talk

The planted freshwater aquarium is a fairly recent phenomena. Due to advanced lighting technology and recent research, keeping aquarium plants has never been easier. A well planted aquarium is a sight to behold. It took time, money and effort to get these tanks to look the way they are and aquarists are reluctant to add fish that may disrupt this planted utopia. Unfortunately cichlids in general have gotten a bad rap as aquarium residents that will uproot, and damage plants, as well as harm or K*ll other less aggressive tankmates. While there are definitely some cichlid species that have these traits, there are plenty of other cichlids that will go quite well in a fully planted tank. They share the same water quality parameters, are relatively peaceful and worth adding to bring some personality to any tank. Cichlids have never been a fish you look at. They are a fish you watch.

About Our Speaker Chuck Rambo

Chuck has been keeping cichlids for most of his life. He started out with a little 5 gallon aquarium that eventually grew to a fish room with over 50 aquariums full of cichlids from all over the world. His love of cichlids led him to trips to the Great Rift Lakes of Africa and many trips to Florida cichlid farms to collect cichlids. He is a past president and served on many committees over the years for the Pacific Coast Cichlid Association. He is a former Chairman of the American Cichlid Association and has also served on many different committees. He has given presentations on cichlids in 20 different states and three different countries. Chuck's other interests are carnivorous plants and collecting antique aquariums.
