Forrest Day is a both a man and a band. ‘Right On Time’ is his new album.
The Man: Forrest Day was born outside of San Francisco in 1980. Having grown up in a household that embraced music, he took to it at a young age and by 12 was already demonstrating proficiency with the saxophone. By 15, Forrest had begun playing in a band with friends from school. They earned a strong following and were known for their intense live shows. These early performances proved revelatory, as Day discovered the power of live music, and the release it gave both him and the audience. It was also during this time that Day began to collaborate with those who would help shape his future as a musician. The band featured both Terrell Liedstrand and Meric Long, (Long has since achieved notable success on the indie circuit as one half of The Dodos). Forrest and Meric continued to work together on a project following high school, though this stalled due to Meric’s academic pursuits, and Forrest being called back to the Bay Area.
The move proved fortuitous; in 2001 Forrest took on the role of lead singer and songwriter in his first band, called View From Here, which also featured Liedstrand and Long at different points. The band played many shows and developed an impressive following, but had few ambitions outside of the Bay Area. They disbanded in 2003 feeling a change of musical direction coming.
With no clear plan or direction, Forrest started making beats and producing tapes with local rappers. He started selling W**d on the street and hanging out with thugs, and wound up making some popular underground mixtapes with local M.C.’s. Day’s work with his two main collaborators ended when one wound up in prison for drug dealing, and the other was shot and killed.
Once again, Forrest was directionless. He made a few demos and, with the help of engineer Luke Dillon, got himself a production deal with Chocolate O’Brian, a team comprised of Stephen Bradley (No Doubt) and Dave Tweedie. Together they produced a self-titled E.P. It was during this time that the distinctive sound of Forrest Day was born, featuring a mix of the eclectic styles he grew up playing and loving — jazz, funk, ska, pop, rap etc. In 2006, with an album release date ahead, he needed to start a band.
Here we are in 2025, new album coming 10/10/25, live show as dynamic as ever.
