WHAT ARE SOCIAL COGNITVE SKILLS?
Social cognitive skills are the mental abilities we use to understand and navigate the social world. Children who struggle with social cognition may find social interactions confusing and challenging.
This can lead to problems in relationships, as they may misread the social cues of others (may think a peer is making fun of them when they are not), may not understand unwritten rules of behavior, has difficulty working cooperatively with peers, or unintentionally comes across as rude or uncaring (empathy). This can lead to social isolation, anxiety, low self-esteem, and sometimes bullying. Social cognitive skills can be developed through explicit instruction and facilitated opportunities to practice new skills.
WHAT ARE SOCIAL COGNITIVE LEARNING GROUPS?
Social Cognitive groups provide structured and play-based activities in a safe and supportive setting where children practice new skills through real-world interactions and receive in the moment therapist support, leading to increased confidence and skill acquisition.
