Puro Lecture Presents "Why We Do It for the Plot"

Why do we say yes to things we can’t fully explain? Why do the safest choices often feel like the least interesting ones? And why do the decisions we question the most sometimes make the best stories later?

Puro Lecture invites you to an evening of big ideas, honest conversation, and good drinks with "Why We Do It for the Plot" a casual, thought‑provoking talk on risk, regret, and the choices that shape our careers and lives.

Led by Amanda Ramirez, PhD, this talk explores why humans are drawn to uncertainty, how we make meaning out of “bad” decisions, and why doing things for the plot is often less reckless than it sounds. Expect relatable stories, light research, and plenty of moments where you’ll think, okay… same.

But this isn’t just a lecture.

Ahead of the event, registrants will be invited to share a short, optional example of a time they did something “for the plot.” Select submissions will be anonymized and woven into the evening as conversation starters and reflections during the talk and Q&A, creating a shared, participatory experience without putting anyone on the spot.

The night blends a 45‑minute talk with guided mixer moments, audience conversation, and open Q&A, giving you space to connect with others, reflect on your own plot‑driven moments, and trade stories over drinks.

Amanda Ramirez, PhD is a higher-education leader with doctorate in psychology, working at the intersection of human behavior, careers, and community. She helps people navigate uncertainty, make meaning out of non‑linear paths, and build lives that don’t always follow the plan, but usually make a better story.

Mario Vela is a higher education leader and doctoral student who’s endlessly curious about careers, big life choices, and why the messy paths are usually the most meaningful. He helps people make sense of uncertainty, lean into values-driven decisions, and collect stories that may not look planned, but tend to be worth it.
