This is the story of Filipino American civil rights leaders and labor organizers Larry Itliong, Philip Vera Cruz and other Delano Manongs (referring to the early generation of Filipino immigrants in Delano) who started and led the successful 1965 Grape Strike in Delano and co-founded the United Farm Workers union.
While earlier narratives of the historical strike overlooked the crucial roles of Filipino American farm workers and labor leaders, a movement grew from the efforts of family members, community members and scholars to preserve the memories, historic accounts, and records from this period. This film is one of the products of this movement.
The unity among farmworkers the Filipino farmworkers forged for the Delano grape strike demonstrated the power of unity can lead to worker protections and better conditions. The 1965 Delano Grape Strike led to higher wages, health care and the banning of harmful pesticides. These successes laid the groundwork for further victories and labor organizing. While not widely known, Filipino farmworkers, like Japanese farmworkers, have had important roles in this period of history.
This event is hosted by the San Antonio chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) while the chapter hosts "Golden Years: Weighing Philippine Martial Law, 1971-1982". The workshop on "How to Conduct Oral History Interviews", led by Emily P. Lawsin, FANHS National President Emerita, will follow around 1:30 pm.
Please join the workshop to help preserve local history.
