EAST FOUNDATION: New World Screw Worm Educational Presentation

The New World Screwworm is a serious parasite of livestock and wildlife hosts. This blowfly deposits eggs onto wounds and mucous membranes of any warm-blooded host, and the larvae from these eggs feeds on living tissue. The screwworm was eradicated from Texas and the United States decades ago, but re-entered Mexico in late 2024 and has advanced northward since that time, and a case has been reported within 70 miles of the Texas-Mexico border. Re-entry of the screwworm fly into Texas would have significant implications for livestock and wildlife management, the movement of animals for trade and exhibition, and even grocery prices. Join this informational session to learn about the current status of this pest, measures that are being taken to mitigate its impact, and how you might prepare.
