The berimbau is a traditional percussion instrument of Afro Brazilin origin best known for its connection with the Martial Art Capoeira. Even aside from Capoeira it is a instrument of surprising versatility and history and is used in many areas of both modern and traditional music.

The playing section will focus on recognition of rhythms and improvisation. Capoeira rhythms will be discussed and played but no focused on.
No background in Capoeira, percussion or music is required for the course.
Berimbaus will be provided on the day, there are 14 instruments available which limits places on the course
The Hosts
The course is being held by Cada Um Ensina Um Capoeira Angola collective. A member of the group, Paul Morton (Jagunco), will be leading the course along with Peter Kelly (Dois Metros). Paul has recently taken advantage of a holiday in Brazil to source and bring to the UK a number of berimbaus with plans to make them more available at reasonable prices to local Capoeira players and musicians.
Both Peter and Paul have over twenty years each playing capoeira, berimbau and percussion and mainstream music, having played live in bands.
Cada Um Ensina Um Capoeira Angola started in 2018 and currently runs regular training sessions at Earthbeat Centre, Saltburn, on Monday evenings.
