About this Event

PATTERNS & CONTINUITY: AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY IN CARBON COUNTY, UTAH

Americans arrived in 1847 as enslaved persons. By 1900 approximately 600 African Americans lived in Utah. Carbon County was one community that attracted Black migrants. In 1920, approximately 150 African Americans lived in Carbon County. About 73% of the African American population of the county was born in a Southern state.

Graduate student Michael Forvil successfully defended his BYU Africana Studies thesis on African Americans in Carbon County and what the experience was for them and the townspeople. At this event, Michael will present his thesis and his research findings. While a scholarly presentation, the subject and its research findings are for anyone interested in Utah history, African American history in Utah and the United States, and the history of Carbon County.
