Join us for the opening reception of ‘Textures’ by local photographer Emily Stark. When not teaching psychology at MSU, Emily spends her free time dancing with the Govenaires, traveling, attending live music, and spending time in nature.
Artist Statement:
Textures features recent photographs showcasing natural and artificial patterns, asking the question of what really encompasses a natural versus an artificial setting. What is more natural than the human urge to decorate an empty space with graffiti, or the slow decay of human-made objects? In this show, I contrast scenes of landscapes with spots of human ingenuity and interest, juxtaposing items of nature with images from towns and cities. I am also exploring larger-format printing, to give an immersive feel to the show and allow the viewer to see more detail in tree branches or peeling paint. Some of my favorite photography subjects are represented here, such as solitary trees standing along a Minnesotan field, whimsical statues, weathered pianos, and abandoned spaces. Many pictures showcase my home of Minnesota, though others are taken from worldwide travels. The process of selecting these images and viewing them in these larger formats has increased my appreciation for the many beauties that we encounter in our daily lives and renewed my joy in photography—thank you for viewing this show and taking a moment to enjoy these patterns!
