About the event

Nuclear Power: Generating a Clean Future - Presented by Dr. Cole Atlin
Climate change is already affecting communities across Canada through rising temperatures, extreme weather, and shifting ecosystems. Meeting our climate targets will require transforming how we produce and use energy, using every low-carbon tool available. Nuclear energy provides reliable, carbon-free power at scale, complements renewables, and enables innovation in clean hydrogen and district heating. With 60% of Ontario’s electricity already from nuclear and a long history of leadership in safety, technology, and waste management, Canada is well positioned to expand its role. This talk will examine the urgent realities of climate change, the challenges of decarbonizing our energy system, and the potential of both existing and proposed nuclear facilities to help build a sustainable, secure, low-carbon future.

Cole Atlin is an environmental professional with over 13 years of experience in sustainability, impact assessment, and community engagement. She holds a PhD in Social-Ecological Sustainability from the University of Waterloo, where her research focused on co-developing sustainability frameworks with Northern remote Indigenous communities. Currently, Cole is Manager, Environment at Calian Nuclear, leading projects that combine technical expertise with meaningful collaboration, including work on nuclear impact assessments, licensing, and Indigenous and stakeholder engagement. She is passionate about creating innovative, inclusive solutions that advance green energy and support a low-carbon future, and she enjoys sharing knowledge that helps communities engage with complex environmental topics. Cole is the mother of a little boy, and is a life long St Marys resident. She has been Chair of the St Marys Public Library Board since 2015 and on the Library Board since 2012.
