About this Event

The Indigenous Futures Centre invites Indigenous community members, staff, students and visitors, to our September Seminar Series featuring Professor Levon Blue and Professor Sharlene Leeroy-Dyer on Tuesday September 2 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm.

In this 2-person panel presentation, Levon Blue will revisit critical discussions surrounding Indigenous peoples’ early access to the age pension and superannuation exploring the question of How can the retirement income system be improved to meet the needs of Indigenous peoples? She will present findings based on a paper recently published with Peter Anderson & Mark Brimble in which there are ways to close the superannuation gap and create intergenerational wealth for Indigenous peoples.

Sharlene Leeroy-Dyer focuses on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment disadvantage, exploring what life is like in the workplace for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. She will present analyses from a paper recently submitted to the International Journal of Indigenous Business examining power and privilege in workplaces, applying intersectionality theory, critical race theory and Aboriginal feminist theory with the goal to dramatically shift the nature and scope of settler colonial relations aimed at critiquing and questioning the processes of inclusion and exclusion.

Together, the panel suggests ways in which workplaces and superannuation can better meet the needs of Indigenous peoples, transforming the design and delivery of policies, programs and services from one originally designed for white men to one that better suits Indigenous peoples’ needs.

Keywords: Racism, Whiteness, Race, Power and Privilege, Inclusivity, Intersectionality
