Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. The practice of using ashes as an outward expression of repentance and humility draws on biblical themes seen throughout the Old Testament (Job 42:6; Daniel 9:3; Jonah 3:6). Over time, early Christian communities adopted some of these practices, culminating in a distinct day of worship and introspection that marks the beginning of a 40-day period of renewal.
