The Westchester Choral Society presents our Holiday Concert – “A Ceremony of Joy: from medieval echoes to desert skies, a celebration of joy in song.” This uplifting concert features Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols” and Conrad Susa’s “Carols and Lullabies.” Both works are guaranteed to put you in a festive mood while introducing you to both new and familiar carols.
Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols” was composed during World War Two as the world longed for peace. The composer relied on medieval texts and a collection of poems to inspire this 11-movement work, which remains one of his most popular compositions.
Susa’s “Carols and Lullabies” is a dedication to “Christmas in the Southwest.” The pieces are bright and energetic and some are sung in Spanish. Written in 1992, Susa intended this composition to be a companion to Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols” and we are delighted to perform them together here.
