The oldest examples of European portable sculptures of figures and animals found so far, date from around 40,000 years ago.
We can never know the significance of these human and animal figures to their makers – but they must have felt wonderful to hold.
As a child I saw a picture of the Venus of Willendorf – I wanted to have it in my hands so badly - but knew that was impossible.
So, I tried to make one.
I suppose I have been trying ever since, in one way or another – hoping to catch something of the energy of the form – something that I could hold in my hands and treasure.
Throughout the ages, amulets and charms have been carried for many reasons - to bring good luck, to protect, or to give courage.
This workshop is an opportunity for you to choose your own subject and make your own figurative, abstract or animal form in clay. The finished pieces will then be left to dry and taken to be fired. They will then be returned to RCC to be smoke fired and waxed.
White stoneware clay and clay modelling tools will be provided and source material will be available for inspiration, but do feel free to bring your own tools and images if there is a particular piece you have in mind.

Grŵp Oedran - Oedolion
Mae’r esiamplau hynaf o gerfluniau cludadwy Ewropeaidd o ffigurau ac anifeiliaid sydd wedi’u darganfod hyd yn hyn yn dyddio oddeutu 40,000 o flynyddoedd yn ôl.
Nid oes modd i ni wybod beth oedd arwyddocâd y ffigurau hyn o fodau dynol ac anifeiliaid i’w gwneuthurwyr – ond mae’n rhaid eu bod yn teimlo’n rhyfeddol yn y llaw.
Pan oeddwn i’n blentyn gwelais lun Fenws Willendorf. Roeddwn i’n ysu ei chael yn fy nwylo ond roeddwn i’n gwybod bod hynny’n amhosibl. Felly, ceisiais greu un.
Hwyrach fy mod wedi bod yn ymdrechu byth ers hynny, yn gobeithio dal rhywbeth o’r egni a’r ffurf, rhywbeth y gallwn ei ddal yn fy nwylo a’i drysori.
Drwy’r oesoedd cludwyd swynoglau a swyndlysau – i ddod â lwc dda, i ddiogelu, i wroli neu iachau.
Mae’r gweithdy hwn yn gyfle i chi ddewis eich testun eich hun a chreu ffurf anifail ffigurol neu haniaethol o glai. Yna caiff eich darnau gorffenedig eu gadael i sychu ac yna eu tanio. Ar y 1af Tachwedd byddwch yn dychwelyd ac yn ailymuno â’ch darnau er mwyn eu tanio â mwg a’u cwyro cyn mynd â nhw adref â chi.
Darperir clai crochenwaith caled gwyn ac offer modelu clai, a bydd deunydd crai ar gael i’ch ysbrydoli, ond ar bob cyfrif dewch â’ch hoffer a’ch delweddau eich hun os oes gennych chi ddarn penodol mewn golwg.
