March Meeting AT Program Details
“Gideon Lincecum: A Look Back 150+ Years Later”
Our presenters are cousins, David Lincecum and
Mark Lincecum, respectively, 6th and 5th
generation descendants of the man our chapter is
named for. You may have read books by David's
father, Jerry Bryan Lincecum, a Texas folklorist and
historian. David will read excerpts from Gideon’s
own writings, highlighting thoughts penned during
his 7-month journey to Texas. Gideon Lincecum
observed a “Texas unvarnished by human animals,” and that helped him decide to move here in 1848 at age
30 with his wife Sarah and their 10 children. Gideon was more than a botanist; he lived a long, and
interesting life before arriving in Texas; he was larger than life, so expect to be educated and entertained.
