We are all bearing witness to the growing needs in our community - we can see it every day in our neighborhoods, at our food pantry lines, and in growing housing and healthcare struggles.
Many of us respond by volunteering or working for service agencies and charitable endeavors. But, while these programs are essential, they cannot change the systems that produce poverty.
Join us for a conversation and workshop on Projects of Survival - a model of community organizing used by organizations of the poor through history, to both meet immediate needs and build community organization for systemic change. We’ll discuss:
- The differences between charity, mutual aid, and projects of survival
- What it means to address root causes of poverty
- How we can begin organizing in our existing programs
This is part 1 of a 2 part workshop series. The second workshop, on Organizing Conversations, will be held on Wednesday, November 12, at 7pm at the Rotterdam Community Center.
