Weds 1st Oct, 6pm (1 hour session) – 3 week course
Meet: 6pm at the first carpark corner of Longmile & Tarawera Rds
Suitable for adults and young ones 10yrs+

Keen to give race-walking a go?! Come along to a FREE 3 week ‘Racewalking 101’ course and learn about the art of race-walking. No previous experience required!! We will be starting from scratch and have you race-walking within 3 weeks.

The coaching portion will be run by Kerris Browne racewalker, previous Racewalking Official, historical coach for Lake City Athletics childrens’ racewalking medalists, and coach to Megan Romanes, our resident winner of the Rotorua Marathon 2021 in a time of 4:40:52. Kerris has earned multiple racewalking podiums herself, and will be in Rarotonga this September defending her 32km title.

Is race walking difficult?
NO! Like running, race walking is physically strenuous. But according to research, runners hit the ground with as much as 4 x’s their body weight per stride, whereas race walkers, who do not leave the ground, generate only about 1.4 x’s their body weight with each step. So in saying that…..it is a lot less harsh on your body.

Is race walking good exercise?
YES! Health professionals agree that racewalking is GREAT low-impact and cardiovascular exercise.

Is racewalking hard on your joints?
Race walking has evolved into a very fluid, smooth and enjoyable way to walk that actually puts LESS strain on your joints. And it burns more calories per km than fitness walking!

Is race walking fun?
YES! I have been racewalking for a few years now and the walking competitiveness at parkrun is great!!

Can I get faster?
Absolutely! Once you learn how to prevent the front leg from ‘braking’, you will be off. Very average runners, can become outstanding racewalkers!

Will I look like ‘Cath and Kim’?
Probably….! But we will all look the same so don’t worry 😊
