The stories we bury often hold the most power.
These are the stories we are inclined to resist, skip over, or mentally revise. Shadow work invites us to confront the aspects of ourselves we want to keep hidden — shame, grief, desire, anger, jealousy, vulnerability—these are the parts of our stories we want to conceal. Without light, deep within, these stories can become distorted; softening around the edges in order for our own survival.
But when we unbury them, giving them words and substance, bringing them to the page, writing can become more authentic, more human — and with that, more interesting and transformative for both writer and reader!
Writing to Unbury Shadows:
Memoirists: uncover not just what happened, but what shaped the story behind the story — family myths, unspoken grief, or inherited patterns.
Fiction writers: create characters with true depth, shaped by contradiction, longing, and unresolved wounds.
Shadow work can help dissolve writer’s block brought on by unrealized fears. It can offer tools to meet those fears and to write through them instead.
