Beginning Quilting - Tools and Techniques

Overview: If you want to try your hand at the traditional and also modern craft of quilting, this introductory class of basic quilt construction is for you. You will learn techniques for planning, cutting, and construction of a basic quilt block as well as skills in selecting fabrics and materials. Emphasis will be placed on accuracy in cutting and sewing to insure your quilt comes together perfectly. Students will complete a sample block.
You should be able to operate a basic sewing machine and sew a straight stitch. You do not have to know anything about quilt construction.
Supply List:
- Sewing machine in good working order
- Thread in a neutral color such as white or cream (50 wt. recommended)
- Seam ripper
- Rotary cutter (45 mm recommended) such as Olfa or Fiskars
- Straight pins and pincushion
- Scissors
- Acrylic ruler (6” x 12” recommended) such as Omnigrid
- ¼” foot for your machine if you have one but is not required
- At least 1/4 yard of 3 cotton fabrics that you like together -
a light, medium. and dark or ones that have contrast.
