'This is the best of me ... this, if anything of mine, is worth your memory.'
That's what Sir Edward Elgar, quoting the writer John Ruskin, wrote at the end of the score for his hauntingly beautiful 'The Dream of Gerontius'.
The work is based on the poem of the same name by John Henry Newman, and tells the story of the soul's journey through death.
The setting of Rochester Cathedral, England's second-oldest cathedral after Canterbury, can only add to the power of the piece. As will our fine soloists:
Esmée Loughlin-Dickenson, Mezzo-Soprano (Angel)
Simon Mascarenhas Carter, Tenor (Gerontius)
Edward Birchinall, Bass-Baritone (Priest)
The voices of the chorus will be augmented by Rochester Sinfonietta, which we're delighted to work alongside.
Conducted by our Director of Music, Adrian Bawtree.
