About the event

Mary Favret: Silent Reading and the Invention of Intimacy
Readers today may think of reading as a solitary, silent experience, but silent reading was a rather late development in the history of reading. In this lecture, Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Mary Favret will analyze the impact of silent reading on early nineteenth century authors--where they questioned it, where they magnified it.
