Martial Arts Classes at the UCR Student Recreation Center begin January 5 and offer something for everyone—no prior experience required.
✨ Choose from multiple martial arts styles:
🥋 Karate
Our beginner-friendly karate classes welcome all skill levels and focus on foundational techniques like stances, kicks, and punches. Students learn self-defense, traditional martial arts principles, and develop confidence, discipline, and physical strength in a supportive environment.
🤼 Judo
This introductory Kodokan Judo course teaches basic throws, pins, arm bars, and chokes, along with proper falling techniques to prevent injury. Classes include structured practice and Randori (free practice), emphasizing respect, etiquette, and safe training. Eligible students may test for Yellow Belt at the end of the quarter.
☯️ Tai Chi (Yang Style)
Tai Chi Yang is a gentle, flowing martial art that focuses on balance, breath control, mindfulness, and controlled movement. This introductory class is ideal for reducing stress, improving flexibility, and building overall wellness while learning a traditional internal martial art.
🌀 Aikido
Aikido training builds strength, endurance, and confidence while emphasizing fluid movement and precise technique. Students practice empty-hand techniques, weapons skills (Jo & Bokken), and Ukemi (the art of safe falling). UCR Aikido is a proud affiliate of Birankai North America.
