The Ripon College Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble will perform a concert, Friday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m., in Demmer Recital Hall of Ripon College’s C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts.
Admission is free and open to the public. Adjunct Instructor of Music Paul Dietrich is the conductor.
“These concerts are always exciting,” Dietrich said. “Our jazz groups typically only get one performance per semester where we’re the sole featured group, so it is really our showcase event. You’ll hear mostly from our larger Jazz Ensemble, but the smaller Jazz Combo, which focuses more on the improvisational side of jazz, will also perform at this concert.”
Dietrich said the groups will perform music that covers a lot of different styles, including the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s hit “Little Brown Jug,” Charles Mingus’s “Boogies Stop Shuffle” and an arrangement of the Harold Arlen classic “Blues in the Night.”
They will also perform modern funk pieces that were composed and arranged by Wisconsin composers: Fred Sturm’s arrangement of his son Ike’s “Blue Opening,” John Harmon’s “East St. Louis,” a piece Dietrich arranged that was originally by the Eau Claire saxophonist Sue Orfield and an original piece by Dietrich, a modern jazz arrangement of J.S. Bach’s popular “Air in G.”
Dietrich said people should come to the concert for many reasons.
“First, concerts are fun and supporting live music is incredibly important,” Dietrich said. “Second, support your friends, both the Ripon College students in our ensemble and the members of the broader community. And finally, you might hear something new that you really like.”
