From October 10 until November 20, ISSP Gallery will host Italian artist Sara Palmieri’s Between Memory, Place, and Matter, a solo exhibition exploring the intersections of place, material, and collective experience. The opening will take place on October 9 at 6 PM and will include a guided tour with the artist.

The exhibition is rooted in research that began during Palmieri’s first residency at ISSP in 2019. It unfolds as a poetic investigation into how histories and identities are embedded in spaces and materials. Through experimental analog processes and sculptural reinventions, Palmieri renders visible the latent histories embedded in buildings, surfaces, and territories – inviting visitors to reflect on the meanings of transmission of memory, belonging, identity, and loss.
At ISSP Riga, Palmieri presents her ongoing exploration across multiple geographies – Italy and abroad – transforming the gallery into a living archive. Traces of Riga’s architectural landscape recur throughout the exhibition, and other fragments of memory re-emerge in transformed scales and contexts. Matter itself becomes both witness and vessel of collective history, inviting visitors to chart their own path through the fragments she presents.

Sara Palmieri (Italy, 1974) is a visual artist, curator, and lecturer based in Rome. Trained as an architect at La Sapienza University, she later shifted her focus to photography, using it to explore time, memory, and materiality. Her work has been shown internationally at Kunsthalle Darmstadt, Istanbul Biennial, PhMuseum Days, Matèria Gallery, Fotohaus ParisBerlin, and more. Her latest book, The Line of Water, was published in March 2025.

Izstāde veidota kā poētisks pētījums, kas aizsākās mākslinieces pirmās ISSP rezidences laikā 2019. gadā un ataino to, kā vēstures un identitātes tiek ietvertas telpās un materiālos. Palmjēri apvieno fotogrāfiju, skulptūru un instalāciju, izmantojot arhīvu attēlus, arhitektūru, ainavas un atrastus materiālus, lai padarītu redzamus apslēptus stāstus un aicinātu reflektēt par mājām, piederību un zaudējumu.
ISSP Galerijā māksliniece prezentē šobrīd vairākās ģeogrāfiskās vietās – Itālijā un ārpus tās – notiekošo izpēti, pārveidojot galeriju par dzīvu arhīvu. Izstādē redzami Rīgas arhitektūras ainavas fragmenti, kuros atmiņa parādās pārveidotos mērogos un kontekstos. Māksliniece nevis rekonstruē notikumus, bet gan ļauj ielūkoties procesos, kas paliek apslēpti, aptverti žestos, priekšmetos un vidē, aicinot apmeklētājus pašiem atklāt savu ceļu cauri piedāvātajiem elementiem.

Sara Palmjēri (1974) ir vizuālā māksliniece, kuratore un lektore, kas dzīvo un strādā Romā. Sākotnēji viņa studējusi arhitektūru Romas La Sapienza universitātē, bet vēlāk pievērsusies fotogrāfijai kā galvenajam instrumentam laika un atmiņas uztveres izpētē. Viņas darbi izstādīti starptautiski – Darmštates Kunsthallē, Stambulas biennālē, PhMuseum Days, Matèria galerijā, Fotohaus ParisBerlin u.c., kā arī publicēti The British Journal of Photography un Photoworks Annual. 2025. gada martā izdevniecībā Witty Books izdota viņas jaunākā grāmata The Line of Water.
