About this Event

MBT Practitioner Training for BPD (2-day workshop)
26th and 27th November 2025

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COURSE IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED THE MBT-BASIC 3-DAY TRAINING. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS OUTLINED BELOW.

Overview

Spectrum is proud to be able to deliver the MBT Basic Training in Melbourne, Australia. In this two-day workshop, you will expand previous knowledge, embed the basic skills of Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), and enhance your expertise through hands-on demonstrations and role plays.

The new MBT Certificate course - practitioner level is made up of two days of live, instructor-led content (9am- 4:30pm, with breaks). This may require you to demonstrate your own use of basic MBT interventions via video/audio and other role play exercises.

Participants are encouraged to apply to bring a clinical video or audio of their work to demonstrate their use of basic MBT interventions. Consent from the client for part of a session to be shown for training purposes is required. If you wish to present, please contact anVsaWFuICEgbmVzY2kgfCBlYXN0ZXJuaGVhbHRoICEgb3JnICEgYXU=.

Learning objectives:

This two-day workshop expands on previous knowledge and embeds the basic skills of mentalization based treatment (MBT) learned in basic training at a more skilled level. Some offline preparation is required along with attendance at both days of the training.

The course includes:

  • Lectures on current developments in MBT
  • Working with trauma in MBT
  • How to use the MBT adherence scale as part of the interactional and recursive aspect of mentalizing and as part of self-appraisal of adherence to MBT.
  • Higher skill development of interventions relevant to individual and group MBT therapy using clinical demonstration, video ratings, and role plays.

During the course participants are asked to present clinical dilemmas that they have met during their clinical work. These are discussed and used as exemplars to finesse MBT interventions which are then illustrated through role plays.

Aims of course:

  • Help participants embed and develop further their skills to treat patients with personality disorder using MBT
  • Introduce the adherence scale for rating treatment sessions
  • Benchmark skills required to deliver MBT at a practitioner certification level

On successful completion of this course and demonstration in expert supervision of the clinical competences outlined in the quality assurance guidelines for good practice as published by the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families (AFC), a Registered Incorporated UK Charity, students will be eligible to register as MBT Practitioners.

The overall competences learned on completion of the MBT Basic Course and the Practitioner Course are outlined under the outline of the MBT Basic Course.

For more information on the Anna Freud Centre MBT training program, please refer to their website here.
