The powerhouse 9-piece big band, fronted by wicked guitar, massive horns and backed by a driving rhythm section, is inspired by the world of groove music. The group’s high energy shows intertwine originals and instrumental arrangements based on #funk #jazz #jam, #afrobeat, and #ethiojazz sources delivering a sound that’s exotic and entrancing.
Lineup: George M Lowe, guitar and arrangements; Pete Anderson, trombone; Keith Cable, percussion; Hunter Duke, percussion; Marc Langelier, bass; John Lilley, alto/tenor sax; Scott Milstead, drums; Chris Sclafani, alto/baritone sax; Chris Vasi, guitar.
The group’s repertoire is diverse and danceable and centers on the unique sounds of Ethiopia’s “Golden Age” that flourished under the rule of Haile Selassie. Their acclaimed reworkings of EthioJazz classics of the 60s & 70s are highlights of their recordings “Greatest Hits” & “Buzz and The Bells” that have received widespread acclaim, including top ratings in the premier world music mag @songlinesmagazine and from @banningeyre of @afropopworldwide
Recognized for their outstanding interpretations of Ethiopian classics, they were invited to perform for the US retirement celebration for the great Ethiopian singer #MahmoudAhmed “King of Memories” per recommendation of French musicologist and #Ethiopiques founder Francis Falceto.
