This course provides an advanced understanding of the concept and application of Systems Engineering across a variety of industries.

About this Event

Area of Interest: Systems Engineering

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Advanced Systems Engineering (SE) course aims to provides attendees with an advanced understanding of the concept and application of SE across a variety of industries. This course will further develop a participants understanding of requirements engineering, the processes undertaken as part of the acquisition phase of the system lifecycle, the role and use of Verification and Validation (V&V) in realising capable systems, the management of SE and variations on the standard SE processes.

The two-day Core Systems Engineering short course is a prerequisite for this tailored three-day Advanced Course. The Advanced SE Course includes many design exercises that illustrate the application of SE processes in various contexts to be ready for the systems of the future. The exercises allow the opportunity to practice, use and discuss systems engineering, focusing on the early concept definition and acquisition portion of the systems life cycle.

Duration: 3 Days

Delivery Mode: On-campus and remote

WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE
  • UNSW Canberra certificate of completion/attendance
  • Masters credit: UNSW Canberra allows students who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 days of approved professional education courses to use those courses as credit in eligible postgraduate programs.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This three-day course will benefit people who are involved in the planning, execution and delivery of projects which involve multiple stakeholders, numerous objectives and many components and who are familiar with the core concepts of SE. Examples of such projects include designing a new aircraft, developing an Enterprise Resource Planning software package, planning a large infrastructure project, developing a new learning package for an organisation or developing a new product which will be integrated into a wider system.

Due to the nature of systems, this course is applicable to a wide variety of industries including Logistics, Manufacturing, Information Technology, Security, Defence and more.

COURSE OUTLINE

The Courses applies the latest International Council on Systems Engineering, SE Body of Knowledge and International Test and Evaluation Association approaches and practices to describe the functions, roles, design and use of systems, including:

  • Requirements engineering and management for realising capable systems, including the various tools that can be used to elicit requirements;
  • The processes undertaken as part of conceptual design activities including stakeholder identification, system scoping, requirements definition etc. and the methods and tools used to carry out these processes;
  • The processes undertaken as part of preliminary design activities including configuration item identification, requirement allocation, interface management etc. and the methods and tools used to carry out these processes;
  • The use of Test and Evaluation (T&E) as part of a wider V&V program including the identification, costs and benefits, and management of T&E
  • The overarching management of SE processes throughout the system lifecycle; and

Variations on the standard SE methodologies including Model Based SE and Agile SE

PRESENTER

Grant Moran is a Chartered Professional Engineer with specialised expertise in delivering complex systems. He has extensive experience covering Defence related areas such as Electronic Warfare, Intelligence and Communications System while serving in the Royal Australian Navy as a Weapons Electrical Engineering Officer, in addition to hands-on experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining complex software applications. Currently, as Industry Specialist at UNSW's Capability Systems Centre and Founder and CEO of Oscillo Labs, Grant applies his operational knowledge to address complex system integration and delivery challenges. With Master's degrees in Systems Engineering, Project Management and Capability Management, he brings practical insights into both technical and strategic aspects of modern complex system management and product development.
