When voters successfully expanded the County Commission from three to five seats, it was a significant step toward improving representation and accountability in our local government. That decision deserves a thoughtful follow-through. What is happening at the District Mapping Advisory Committee is anything but. The current districting process is being rushed through on a harrowing three-month timeline that will be prone to mistakes, scrutiny, and lawsuits. At the first meeting, a committee member even said they would be surprised if there weren't lawsuits over this process. So, not only are we wasting time and money on this futile exercise, but we will also be paying for it in tax dollars after it is over.

Is this an attempt to gerrymander Deschutes County?

Commissioners Tony DeBone and Patti Adair were against expanding the commission and following the wide election victory they initiated a districting process. Do they have our best interest in mind? Or should we see this instead as the naked power grab it is, to gerrymander Deschutes County so democracy can die here, much like elsewhere in the Country.

Speak up & attend the upcoming meetings.

Talk to your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers: discussing the importance of a transparent and thoughtful approach to how Deschutes voters will be best represented is a conversation well worth having.

Public meetings mean public comment. Take a moment – and a few friends or neighbors – to stop by for one of the next four meetings and make your voice heard.
