AUTHOR EVENT: Elizabeth DeWolfe

Readfield Community Library and the Readfield Historical Society welcome Maine author and historian Elizabeth DeWolfe on Thursday September 25th at 6:00pm to the Readfield Town Office (8 Old Kents Hill Road) to talk about her new nonfiction book "Alias Agnes." Event is free and open to the public. Please join us! Books available for sale/signing after the event.

About the Book: Alias Agnes is the true story of Jane Tucker, a Maine stenographer turned undercover detective. Adopting the alias Agnes Parker, Jane sought the most famous woman of 1894, Madeleine Pollard, jilted mistress of congressman WCP Breckinridge. Pollard had sued her duplicitous lover for breach of promise when, despite pledges to the contrary, he had married someone else. Jane’s mission: befriend Pollard, and in their feminine heart-to-heart talks, steal her secrets and turn them over to Breckinridge. The six-week trial was a national sensation, and no one suspected that a “girl spy” lurked behind the scenes.

About the Author: Elizabeth DeWolfe is professor of history at the University of New England in Biddeford. She is the award-winning author of The Murder of Mary Bean and Other Stories, and, Shaking the Faith: Women, Family and Mary M. Dyer's Anti-Shaker Campaign.
