There are many ways to see the world. Using eyes gives us the beauty of scenery, the play of light on the water, the delicate variation of colour on a petal. We take photographs, we stand and stare, we remember images.
Looking through the eyes of a blind person takes us far beyond, opening up the true wealth of stimulating experiences which are given to us by Taiao. Mark sees the world through sound in sparkling bird song, in the trickling of a stream, or in the rustle of leaves on a tree. And through exploring the sturdy leaves of a flax, the roughness of tree bark or the soft curves of stone worn by the power of water. His photographs reflect this sensory viewpoint as he seeks to record the beauty of a touch with nature.
Why Taiao? The title Taiao goes beyond the English word ‘🌱 nature’. Taiao speaks of earth, the natural world, our connection to the environment. Project Taiao seeks to marry the worlds of music and the sounds of taiao, to create an immersive and multisensory conversation melding space, sound and pictures.
What to expect? This is indoor forest bathing, exploring sound, vision and touch.
From the moment you enter the space, you find yourself in an immersive experience of nature. In your hand will be an object to feel and explore through touch; in your ears will be birdsong, and on the screen will be illustrations and explanations to prepare you for the event. Once Mark is at the piano starts conversing with the birds, the lights will drop low to allow you to merge yourself with the flowing landscape of sound and vision. Mark aims to create a meditative event which speaks to the heart.
