Date: WEDNESDAY October 8th
โฐ Time: 7 PM
๐ Venue: Ground Up Brewery
๐ฃ๏ธ Guest speaker: Sooji Clarkson
We are stoked to have secured ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ผ๐ท๐ถ ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ๐๐ผ๐ป to come and speak this month. Sooji is a retired mechanical engineer and an NZMGA Assistant Climbing Guide with a habit for seeking punishment in the mountains and a track record of finding it... along with sheer joy, endless yarns, lots of coffee, and the odd moment of transcendence.
"I am a much better climber than I am a skier, I own many more haul bags than I do handbags, and I am probably best known for being able to survive on carrots and peanut butter alone."
In between engineering, recreational and professional climbing, a strong common thread is risk analysis and management - and coupled with human decision making, it forms one of the topics Sooji finds most fascinating. One of the most common questions she gets asked regarding alpine routes is arguably - "do we need a rope?" The answer is usually... it depends! This talk will aim to cover an approach to better answering that question by discussing:
โช๏ธ A basic structure for thinking about, and communicating risk
โช๏ธHow my own risk tolerance has changed over time (or not...!)
โช๏ธSome tools I use to try better assess, and mitigate, risk in the mountains
โช๏ธSome things to think about when planning your own alpine trips
Whether you're new to town and looking to connect with new faces to prepare for a busy summer of adventures, or a seasoned mountaineer looking to get into spring alpine activities and need a partner, come along, grab a drink and connect with some like-minded people!
We will be handing out free OFF-PISTE PROVISIONS, so get ready to sink your teeth into mouth watering vegan jerky!
This event is run through the New Zealand Alpine Club but members and non members are welcome. The more the merrier,
so spread the word.
SEE YOU THERE!
