INTRO:
On October 12, 2025, the Embassy of Japan in Mauritius, in partnership with the Hennessy Park Hotel, will present two Japanese movies – “The Zen Diary” and the animated film “A Letter to Momo”, as part of the Japanese Film Festival – OCT 2025 (JFF - OCT 2025), at the Hennessy Park hotel in Ebene. Anyone interested in attending this unique event should register on the link below. The movies will be screened free of charge. A tasting of matcha ice cream or dorayaki will be offered by the Embassy of Japan after each session. The Hennessy Park hotel is proposing a special Japanese menu for the occasion (see below).

REGISTRATION: 
1. The event will be free to the public, with a 125-seat limit for each movie screening. 
2. The seats will not be allocated – you can sit where you wish so. We recommend you come early to choose your seats. Two front rows will be kept for children, if necessary, for better visibility. 
3. The registration begins as from the 24th September 2025 10AM and will close as soon as we reach the limit of 125 seats for each movie session. The earlier you register will give you more chances you have.
4. As of Monday the 29th of September at 10:00AM, you can now register for both movies.  
5. To register, you will need to have a Google Email (Gmail) address and register on the Google form here:

All your personal information provided will remain private and will only be used by the Embassy of Japan to inform you of future events.
6. You can only register once with your email. Each person must register for his/her seat – except for your child/children, under 18 years old, where you can register your child or children's name in the questionnaire.
7. You will receive an email confirmation. Please be present on Sunday 12 October as from 9:50 for the first session, and 12:50 for the second session, for easy registration process. You will need to present an ID Card such as NIC card, passport or student card.


FOODIES INFO From the Hennessy Park Hotel:
•	On the occasion of the JFF – Oct 25, our partner, the Hennessy Park hotel will be presenting a Special Washoku menu inspired by Japanese cuisine (Washoku) at 12:00. This unique menu will be accessible to a limited number of the JFF registered guests, please register as soon as possible.

“The Zen Diary” (Japanese: 土を喰らう十二ヵ月, Hepburn: Tsuchi o kurau jūni-kagetsu, lit. 'Twelve Months of Devouring Soil') is a 2022 film directed by Yuji Nakae. The movie is adapted from the essay "Tsuchi wo Kurau Hibi " by Mizukami Tsutomu.
The famous culinary specialist Yoshiharu Doi was requested to collaborate and produce seasonal Japanese cuisines. This movie depicts Buddhist vegetarian cuisine and the sustainable lifestyle of the main character. The food that has been brought to the screen intertwines poetically with the narrative and sensations that are conveyed through the smell and taste of the Earth.

“A Letter to Momo” (Japanese: ももへの手紙, Hepburn: Momo e no Tegami) is the highly anticipated second directorial effort by world-acclaimed anime director Hiroyuki Okiura.
Hiroyuki Okiura made a name for himself as a director with a much acclaimed debut movie, Jin-Roh. He has also been a key animator for “Cowboy Bepop : The movie”, “Your name” and “Patlabor 2: the movie”. Seven years in the making, “A Letter to Momo” combines state-of-the-art traditional hand drawn animation with heart-warming, emotional storytelling for children and adults alike.

JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL
The JFF is an annual event organized by the Embassy of Japan in Mauritius. The first edition was held in two phases in March 2018 in partnership and screenings at/with the MFDC (and the Mcine Trianon network, Flacq Rose Belle, Curepipe the University of Mauritius, the NPCC and the One and Only St Geran.
In 2019, the JFF edition was in partnership with the African Leadership University (ALU), the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (Fine Arts section) and the Lycée des Mascareignes.
Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the JFF was not organized for 2 years, but returned in 2023 in partnership and with screenings at the Hennessy park hotel, Lycée des Mascareignes and Curtin Mauritius. In 2024, the JFF presented Hayao Miyazaki's “The Boy and the Heron”, which won an Oscar in 2024. This March 2025, the JFF presented “Summer wars”, by director Mamoru Hosoda with the support of the Caudan Arts Centre.
