Join us in-person for Swingposium: Maui at 7PM! This one-of-a-kind experience honors the resilience and struggles of Japanese Americans forcibly removed to WWII Internment Camps and uplifts joy in the face of injustice by transporting audiences to a swing dance at “camp” during WWII filled with live bands, taiko, and a story of a young Japanese American’s romance with swing.
The immersive environment surrounds the audience with the sights and sounds of "camp,” your active participation pulls you deeply into the emotional trajectory of the story: the fear and loss of being sent to an Internment Camp, the struggle to maintain dignity and hope, and the ultimate victory of the human spirit. From past presentations, we find that the immersive experience affects people deeply, inspiring community dialog.
The Maui program is offered free of charge due to support from the County of Maui Office of Economic Development.
