The National Trust of Tasmania invites you to join us at the Longford Memorial War Hall for a very special event:
‘Royalty, Chaos, Empire!’
A lecture with international decorative arts expert John Whitehead.
Discover how French decorative arts evolved through revolution and empire — and hear first-hand from one of the world’s leading authorities.
About the Speaker – John Whitehead
John Whitehead is a distinguished dealer, writer, and lecturer specialising in French 18th- and 19th-century interior decoration and works of art, with a particular focus on Sèvres porcelain.
He is the author of The French Interior in the Eighteenth Century (1992), still regarded as the most comprehensive study of the subject, and two definitive volumes on Sèvres porcelain published in 2011 by the Sèvres factory and museum.
In recognition of his contributions to the arts, John was appointed Officier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France (2010) and elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (2014). He has also served on the Council of the Furniture History Society and is currently co-editor of the French Porcelain Society Journal.
John’s scholarship extends across a wide range of French decorative arts, including the role of the marchands-merciers in 18th-century Paris, the use of Japanese lacquer in French furniture, and the collections of William Beckford. He has published extensively in specialist journals and periodicals.
He is currently working on new book projects, including a study of diplomatic gift exchange between France and the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century, and another on Sèvres porcelain with bird decoration.
