We're kicking off the summer season with a birding trip to Eastern Oregon! Come explore Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and look for golden eagles, sage grouse, and rosy finches. Established in 1908 to protect migratory waterfowl, the refuge today encompasses over 187,000 acres, which is a stop along the Pacific Flyway. This is an important area for resting, breeding and nesting migratory birds and other wildlife.
Lodging is at the Malheur Field Station in the Pelican Cabin. The capacity is 9 people and unfortunately no pets allowed. Due to overall costs and planning, we need to limit the number of people who want alternative lodging.
Total Cost for two nights is around $70 per person. 100% of the ticket fee (besides the eventbrite fee), will go towards lodging. Unfortunately, tickets will be non-refundable and the sale will be final.
Food will not be provided, so bring your own. There is a kitchen in the cabin with a fridge, stove, microwave, and oven. Meng and Jeff will provide a welcome dinner Saturday! There is the potential to travel to Burns for an evening outing.
This trip will involve a moderate amount of walking, driving, and waking up early to get to birding destinations. Other fun non-bird activities are stargazing and soaking at the Crystal Crane Hot Springs!
Loose agenda of the weekend. Saturday - arrive at noon and search for golden eagles and owls near the Narrows. Get milkshakes! Check-in at 4pm at Malheur Field Station. Evening stargazing. Sunday - explore the refuge birding hot spots with some light hiking. Burns for dinner and soak at Crane Hot Springs to end the evening. Monday - early birding nearby, pack up and meander home. If you work Mondays, we recommend taking the day off!
