Beading Workshop with Marcy Friesen
Saturday, October 4 · 1–3 PM | Free to the Public
Join us for a special Culture Days event at the Mann Art Gallery—a hands-on beading workshop with artist Marcy Friesen, featuring an introduction to “skin beading.”
Marcy Friesen, of Swampy Cree and Welsh ancestry, lives with her family on a mixed farm near Carrot River, Saskatchewan. She comes from a long line of traditional master beaders and creative makers, and has always felt a deep connection to creating. Through her business, Trapline Creations, Marcy began by crafting utilitarian pieces, but after visiting a modern art gallery in Saskatoon, her focus shifted toward creating thought-provoking “useless” art.
In her work, Marcy uses beads, leather, and furs in unexpected ways to spark conversations around mental health, racism, and residential schools. Over time, she’s discovered that her “useless” art has deep meaning and impact.
This workshop is an opportunity to learn beading techniques from a skilled artist, explore the cultural and personal stories behind the art, and try your hand at creating something uniquely your own.
All materials are provided, and no experience is necessary. Come connect, create, and be part of this inspiring Culture Days event.
