Steve Hayes: “Words and Things”

Words are slippery things. Especially abstract words are often bandied about but rarely defined, and can mean quite different things to people with different worldviews or backstories.

Think of concepts such as modern, premodern, postmodern. Or secular, secularisation, secularism. What does it mean to be “left” or “right”, or what is liberalism actually? This talk aims to uncrunch some of the crunch-points, inviting us to be more aware of our terminology and helping us have better conversations (whatever that means …)

Steve Hayes is an Orthodox deacon, a freelance editor, writer, teacher and missiologist. He was a newspaper proofreader for 2 years and an academic editor at Unisa for 13 years, where his last editing project (last year) was a theological word book. Steve holds a Doctorate in Theology from Unisa.
