Intro to Relief Print Making with Derek Hibbs

What to bring: Before beginning the class, students will need to purchase a basic set of carving tools from Dick Blick, Jerry’s, or another supplier. Speedball Lino Set No. 1. Handle with 5 cutters
Students should also bring basic drawing pencils such as an eraser, Sharpie markers, and/or Pilot brand ballpoint pens, Sketchbook or plain white paper to sketch on, a ruler (optional), nitrile or latex gloves (optional), art apron or smock (optional). Also, print off of an 8” x 6” image you want to transfer and make into a relief print (optional – you can draw it in class too).

This class will cover an introductory overview to the process of relief printmaking, its history, various methods, and producing multiples through printing. Students will complete one print (image) to entirety over their time in this course. You will have the option to create one block to print from using either linoleum or birch plywood. You will produce 6-8 quality prints of this image and experiment with printing by hand and on a small press. We will examine material choices, image/composition decision making, drawing techniques, transfer techniques, carving, printing, tool care, print studio practices, and DIY methods. Students will have the option to explore their own style and creative interests within their imagery. We will be working with an 8” x 6” image size, preplanned ideas or sketches for producing a relief print are highly encouraged but not required. Arist Bio: Derek Hibbs grew up in the Toledo area and completed his MFA in Printmaking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received a BFA in Printmaking from Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne. He currently works in lithography, intaglio, and relief methods of printmaking. Currently, Derek is a full-time preparator at the Chazen Museum of Art and a part-time instructor at Madison College teaching 2D design. Residing in Madison, WI, Derek has a fully functional home print studio set up for his own work, and occasionally works with a number of local artists collaboratively to produce a wide variety of fine art prints. Derek’s work has addressed a range of topics from climate change, social/political concerns, and the internal struggle, and is often inspired by art history. His most recent works have been lighthearted, nature based, and not loaded with such heavy content.
