Kick off 2026 with a refreshing start on the Walkway Over the Hudson!
The Friends of the Walkway and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation invite everyone to celebrate the New Year outdoors by joining our traditional First Day Hike on January 1. The group walk to the flagpole at the Center Overlook will begin at 11 a.m. from both entrances.
Take in breathtaking winter vistas of the Hudson Valley from 212 feet above the river as you choose between two great hiking options:
• Short Walk: A relaxed stroll to the flagpole (approximately ¾ mile one way). All will participate in the Short Walk together. For those seeking a longer trek, they’re welcome to continue on to our…
• Extended Loop: A scenic, modified 360-degree route of about three miles. This adventure takes participants across the Walkway, down the elevator to the riverfront (weather permitting), along the Hudson River, over the Mid-Hudson Bridge, and back to the Walkway via Haviland Road.
Pets: Leashed pets are welcome on the Walkway, but please note they are not permitted on the Mid-Hudson Bridge and therefore cannot participate in the extended loop hike.
First Day Hike is free, open to all ages, and requires no registration. Just bundle up, bring your friends and family, and enjoy the first day of 2026 in one of the Hudson Valley’s most inspiring locations. Thanks to our partners at Scenic Hudson, their solar canopy parking lot on Parker Avenue in Poughkeepsie is available to First Day Hikers on a first-come, first-served basis.
