About the event

Reenactment of the Bombardment of Portland
The Tate House Museum proudly announces a two-day commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Burning of Falmouth with their “Flames to Freedom” events. On Friday, September 19, and Saturday, September 20, 2025, the magnificent Tall Ship Lynx, a replica of an 1812 privateer schooner from Nantucket Island, will sail into Casco Bay portraying the British Ship HMS Canceaux to help the museum reenact one of the most significant events in our city’s past. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for the public to witness living history!

The two-day event offers something for everyone, with a thrilling lineup of activities:
• Friday, September 19: Afternoon Sail aboard the Lynx
Don't miss this unforgettable experience! A limited number of history and sailing enthusiasts will have the chance to set sail aboard the majestic Lynx. This is a unique opportunity to feel the wind in your hair and connect with maritime history in a way you never thought possible.
• Saturday, September 20: Harbor Bombardment Reenactment (10:00 AM - 11:00 AM)
Witness history come to life! This dramatic, free public event will reenact the British bombardment and burning of Falmouth. Gather at the Maine State Pier for the best viewing as opening remarks set the stage for this powerful spectacle.
• Saturday, September 20: Walk-The-Deck of the Lynx (12:00 PM - 3:00 PM)
Step aboard and explore! For a low admission price, visitors can experience a Walk-The-Deck of the Tall Ship Lynx. This immersive event is perfect for families, offering a tangible connection to the past as you discover the details of an 1812 schooner. Veterans and children 12 and under are free.
• Saturday, September 20: Flames to Freedom Reception aboard Lynx (4:30 PM - 7:00 PM)
Conclude the day with a celebratory reception aboard the Lynx at the dock. Enjoy light refreshments and mingle with crew members and museum friends in period attire. The acclaimed musical duo Castlebay will entertain guests with rousing sea shanties. The reception will also feature a short, poignant reflection on the events of 1775, commemorating how Portland rose from the ashes.
