Let's build a hospice for our North Island

We lack proper end-of-life care on the North Island. The previous Island Health palliative care room at Port Hardy Hospital is inadequate. North Island Crisis and Counselling has a 'hospice' program but no where where patients can go to die in comfort.

I - Dr. Alex Nataros - have extra training in palliative/end-of-life care and have worked across hospices in 3 different provinces. I am also a certified 'Death Doula' having completed my training with the Institute for Traditional Medicine.

We urgently need a palliative care hospice to serve the North Island. It is not reasonable for families to have to travel 3 hours each way to Campbell River, the next closest hospice.

My vision is our North Island Community Health Centre Society, a registered non-profit, to steward this project with the support of Port Hardy's Rotary, and obtain a 4-bedroom single story home in Port Hardy to be converted to a hospice. Operational funding and staff support will be provided by Island Health's palliative care program. The Ty Watson house in Port Alberni is an excellent model to build off.
