Powerhouse cellist Timo-Veikko Valve returns to Port Fairy with a visionary recital program, testament to his active commitment to the music of our times through curating and commissioning, which has seen him delivering world premiere performances of multiple concertos and other significant works written especially for him. His versatility shines as he effortlessly leaps across centuries and dances between styles. With Bach as a starting point, the serenely uplifting G Major Prelude blooms into Lidy’s Piece, Kate Moore’s whimsical dance piece telling a mysterious ancient tale that, like birdsong, cannot be deciphered, while the dramatic E-flat Major Prelude heralds ko’u inoa, described by Lanzilotti as “a homesick bariolage based on the anthem Hawaiʻi Aloha.” Colombi’s famous Chiacona is the theme for Kaija Saariaho’s dreamy variation, taking us to Tipi’s native Finland for a grand Sibelius finale.
