Native American Pine Needle Basket Weaving Workshop

To coincide with the museum’s exhibit Weaving Nature: Louisiana’s Native American Basketry, the museum will host a free hands-on workshop to learn long-leaf pine needle basket weaving. Participants can also choose to make a pine needle necklace pendant. Native American basket making is likely the oldest sustained art form in Louisiana, but few skilled artisans are left. That is why a number of practitioners are seeking to revitalize the artform by teaching basket weaving skills that have been passed down generations.
The beginner class at the West Baton Rouge Museum will be led by Elisabeth Pierite. She is a member of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe and Cultural Specialist for the Language & Culture Revitalization Program. Elizabeth learned pine needle basketry from her mother Donna Pierite and great aunts Anna Mae Juneau, Norma Khawaja and Rose Pierite White and considers basketry integral to the cultures of southeastern indigenous tribes.
The workshop will be held at the museum on November 2 from 1:00-4:30pm. The workshop is FREE; however, registration is required by calling the museum.
