Te Hononga hikoi: Taupō Swamp

Te Hononga hīkoi enable our members to connect with others in the Wellington Catchments Collective. It's pretty inspiring seeing the activities happening in other catchment groups.

Friends of Taupo Swamp & Catchment Inc was formed in 2018 by a group of Porirua residents. FOTSC grew out of concern for the protection and enhancement of the Taupo Swamp and catchment and its biodiversity and ecosystems. Restoration activities have been focused on that part of the wetlands that is owned by Porirua City Council.

Back in 2018 there was a lot of blackberry on the site. Now some of the 2019-20 locally sourced plantings by volunteers are 5 metres high. By the end of the current planting season FOTSC will have put in 18K plants. An adjacent planting programme around the Plimmerton Domain coordinated by the local Rotary Club and the Porirua City Council has resulted in 22k trees and plants.
