History of Ponchatoula 1877 - 1919 - Ponchatoula Branch

We welcome back Mr. Jim Perrin for his History of Ponchatoula Presentation.

After the bloody Civil War, and the difficult days of the Reconstruction period, Ponchatoula grew slowly until the strawberry boom began in the 1890's. A wave of prosperity spread across the community prompting construction of many of the classic structures that can currently be seen in Ponchatoula's downtown area. Following World War I, Northern lumber interests made plans to harvest the cypress forests in the swamp areas south of town, which would soon fuel the massive development of Ponchatoula.
