Textiles Manos Magicas: Weaving Workshop

In this workshop you will learn ancient techniques of washing, carding, and dyeing wool with natural products. You will also learn the art of weaving that has been inherited from generation to generation. The Zapotec artisan Vero Mendoza will demonstrate the process she uses in the production of her textiles made on a pedal loom.

Each participant will have the opportunity to create and take home a weaving using a 12”x12” bastidor (weaving frame) and 3 skeins of handspun, naturally-dyed wool.

More about Vero:

“I am a Zapotec woman from Teotitlan Del Valle Oaxaca, Mexico. My mother carried me on her back with her "rebozo," while she washed wool in the river to prepare it for our textiles. She cared, nurtured and taught me everything she knew. This traditional art form sustained us and after my mother’s passing I was not able to weave for 3 years, because of the heartache. This year I am resuming her legacy and gently returning home. When my hands are over the loom I can feel her guiding every string. I smell her in the essence of every element, and witness her magic in the completion of every tapestry. When I weave we are together again - she is here with me.  

My goal this year is to raise funds to rebuild the workshop my mother inherited me and honor her memory through this traditional artform. I aim to conserve my cultural legacy and sustain myself, as I am the last woman in my family to practice this ancestral knowledge. Any support is welcomed.
